If the purpose of this article is to understand academic misconduct through the lens of why students are displaying this type of misconduct, then I appreciate the collection of old research that has been proven by practice experience to be true. And AI is a new tool students use to cheat, or misuse unintentionally. My questions are: what is the difference between misconduct through the use of AI and other ways of academic misconduct? And even more generally: what is the purpose of this article?

There is no difference. Plagiarism is still plagiarism. That’s precisely the point. I’m surprised it didn’t register. That said, I can’t answer your question about AI plagiarism vs traditional plagiarism. That’s the second point you missed. I understand why:) That’s the hard question, the question many CCCC agents in public fail to grasp, where, exactly, is that line? That’s a public Axiology question. I have my opinion, but I’m not the BibliOracle, just a professor emeritus,

I apologise if I did not express myself clearly, and created misunderstanding and irritation. It was not my intention. We may actually find agreement on several points, but I do still have questions. Happy to continue the conversation about this very important topic , in a less public setting.

Me, too, Marion. I’ve been thinking about taking a break from this newsletter for a while. It’s becoming wearing on my psyche what with the phonics wars, the Common Core skirmishes, AI and cheating—I’m not going to be able to solve anything if I let myself burn out.
