You are not watching by yourself. It is wrenching to watch reading for pleasure, social studies--not counting what I consider to be identity (ethnic)studies, experiential learning, and so on whither away, except in a few, privileged spots.

For sure. Reading for pleasure gets short shrift on the same academic stage with reading for information in the quest for college or career. Reading for pleasure is not the same as recreational reading in my mind (and I know in your mind, too) and may be the foundation for the narrower, simpler motivation to persevere in reading for financial profit eh? Reading for work. Reading as technical training. What’s the end game?
