Thanks so much, Greg. This post was challenging, and I’m pleased you enjoyed it. There is protected space in any new metaphor for SEL. Emotionally safe and socially legitimate participation in schooling is sort of squashed in a factory model.

Terry, you really shed light on some realities that have been hidden in the shadows. Your reference to the neglect of bridges connected to the neglect of the physical environment of schools, generally, is an eye opener. The way you exposed this is critical to the support for public schools. Your reference to the North Carolina governor’s request for donations for public schools drove the point home. Ironically, I just read a piece where a school district is requesting parents to rent out a room in their house to a teacher so they can afford to teach and live in the district (which the teacher salaries will not cover). I am currently reading Democracy in Chains by MacLean - a gifted historian. It clearly explains how we got where we are. I look forward to reading you future postings.
