If we think of AI as a tutor, we expect it to provide personalized guidance and responsive feedback. If we frame it as a tool, we treat it as passive equipment awaiting human direction.
But AI systems resist these conventional metaphors because they operate in ways that challenge basic social and cognitive categories relevant to both humans and AI. They process language like humans but lack consciousness.
They provide responses that appear thoughtful and persuasive but emerge from statistical patterns rather than understanding that is sometimes fabricated. They adapt to users like social beings but follow algorithmic parameters rather than emotional intuition.
This metaphorical turmoil becomes particularly acute in literacy education, where the stakes involve fundamental questions about human consciousness, communication, and meaning-making.
When students write with AI, are they collaborating with a partner, using a tool, or depending on a prosthetic? The metaphor we choose shapes not only how we evaluate the interaction but how students experience their own agency and development as writers.
Lakoff's insight suggests we cannot avoid metaphorical thinking about AI—our cognitive architecture demands it. But we can become more conscious of how our metaphors either anthropomorphize AI into human-equivalent status or instrumentalize it into an ordinary piece of machinery.
Neither approach captures what actually happens when AI enters literacy spaces, where artificial text intersects with human addressivity and responsive understanding in ways that transform both.
The challenge is developing metaphorical frameworks that acknowledge AI's genuine capabilities while preserving crucial distinctions between artificial simulation and human consciousness, frameworks to help educators and students navigate these new literacy territories without losing sight of uniquely human textual encounter.

The partnership metaphor hides this asymmetry between human consciousness and artificial simulation. It encourages users to forget they're interacting with algorithms rather than conscious agents.
"Assistant" - This metaphor implies AI simply executes human intentions without affecting them. It masks AI's active role in shaping how we think, read, and write.
The assistant metaphor suggests AI remains external to literacy processes. Evidence shows AI penetrates the cognitive space where consciousness encounters itself through text. This metaphor also trivializes AI's transformative effects on how we address readers and anticipate responses.
Each metaphor carries ideological baggage preventing clear analysis. They either overestimate AI's capacities by treating it as human-equivalent. Or they underestimate its transformative effects by treating it as purely instrumental.
We need metaphors acknowledging both AI's capabilities and its differences from human consciousness. These metaphors must help us understand how artificial responsiveness relates to human addressivity in sociocultural situations. They cannot collapse the radical distinction between artificial intelligence and human intelligence.
The Stochastic Parrot as Flawed Rhetorical Weapon
The "stochastic parrot" metaphor emerged from a 2021 paper by Emily Bender, Timnit Gebru, Angelina McMillan-Major, and Shmargaret Shmitchell titled "On the Dangers of Stochastic Parrots: Can Language Models Be Too Big?"
Published months before OpenAI's ChatGPT-3.5 launch, the paper positioned this metaphor as a preemptive strike against AI hype. When ChatGPT launched in November 2022, critics deployed "stochastic parrot" as rhetorical ammunition against claims about AI capabilities.
But the metaphor contains at least five fundamental fallacies that undermine its analytical value:
The False Equivalence Fallacy - The metaphor treats superficially similar outputs as evidence of identical processes. Both parrots and AI produce human-like language, but their mechanisms differ fundamentally.
Parrots rely on associative memory and vocal reproduction. Parrots have no attention monitors nor syntactic parsers. AI systems perform complex mathematical transformations of linguistic patterns across vast corpora. Equating these processes because they yield similar results commits a basic logical error.
The Reductive Biologism Fallacy - The metaphor reduces computational operations to simple animal instinctive behavior. Real parrots have limited memory and just repeat specific phrases.
AI systems demonstrate contextual adaptation, novel combination, and emergent reasoning that exceed biological mimicry. This reduction obscures rather than illuminates AI's actual capabilities.
The Composition Fallacy - The metaphor assumes that because individual training tokens lack semantic meaning, the entire system lacks meaningful output.
This ignores emergent properties that arise from scale and complexity. Large language models exhibit behaviors not present in their training process—contextual reasoning, style adaptation, creative synthesis—that cannot be explained by simple pattern repetition.
The Strawman Fallacy - The metaphor attacks an exaggerated version of AI claims rather than engaging seriously with actual capabilities. By insisting AI is merely pattern matching, it avoids confronting how sophisticated pattern matching at scale produces novel textual behaviors that affect human cognition.
The Appeal to Ridicule Fallacy - The metaphor's rhetorical power derives from making AI seem absurd—comparing advanced computational systems to mindless birds.
These fallacies proved particularly damaging in educational discourse. The metaphor allowed critics to dismiss AI integration without developing frameworks for understanding human-AI interaction. Educators could invoke stochastic parrot to signal skepticism without engaging with complex questions about when AI supports versus undermines learning.
The metaphor's widespread adoption revealed its function as ideological positioning rather than analytical tool. It became a conversation-stopper that prevented nuanced analysis of AI's effects on reading, writing, and meaning-making.

Moving beyond the stochastic parrot metaphor becomes essential for developing productive approaches to AI in education, i.e., approaches that neither anthropomorphize AI nor dismiss its genuine effects on human cognitive processes.

Here are three candidate metaphors representing my attempt to capture AI's complexity without falling into anthropomorphizing or trivializing traps.
They are admittedly clunky, awkward, but they offer a starting point. They might serve as productive discussion starters in classrooms where high school or college students are coming to grips with the reality of AI, searching for their own metaphors.
Candidate 1: Linguistic Kaleidoscope This metaphor captures AI's capacity to recombine textual patterns into novel configurations while remaining mechanical.
Like a kaleidoscope creates beautiful, coherent patterns from fragmented glass pieces, AI generates coherent responses by mathematically recombining linguistic fragments from training data.
The metaphor acknowledges both the genuine novelty of outputs and the non-conscious nature of the process. It suggests sophisticated pattern-making without implying understanding or intentionality.
The kaleidoscope responds to environmental input (turning, shaking) much as AI responds to prompts, producing results that can surprise even the operator.
Candidate 2: Textual Weather System This metaphor positions AI as a complex emergent phenomenon arising from interactions among countless variables, like weather emerges from atmospheric conditions.
Weather systems exhibit predictable patterns while remaining unpredictable and contingent. They respond to inputs, generate novel configurations, and affect everything in their environment.
Like weather, AI lacks consciousness or intentionality but produces real effects on human activity. The metaphor captures both AI's responsiveness and its fundamental difference from conscious human agency. It suggests something that must be navigated and understood rather than controlled or dismissed.
Candidate 3: Cognitive Echolocation This metaphor draws from how bats navigate by emitting sounds and interpreting reflected patterns. AI operates by bouncing prompts against vast textual landscapes and generating responses based on the patterns that return.
Like echolocation, this process produces remarkably sophisticated navigation without visual consciousness. The metaphor captures AI's capacity for contextual adaptation while emphasizing its radically different mode of perception.
It suggests both capability and real limitation—AI navigates textual space through pattern reflection rather than conscious perception of the world.
Each metaphor attempts to honor both AI's capabilities and its categorical differences from human consciousness. They avoid anthropomorphizing while acknowledging demonstrable effects on human literacy practices.
The question is which metaphor, if any of the candidates, best supports clear thinking about AI integration in educational contexts without either dismissing its capabilities or overestimating its autonomy.

I’ve struggled with that myself because so much of what we’re describing are actually techniques to shape the behavior. The bigger question is what the overall framework should be.
