As a professor at California State University, Sacramento, I taught clinical and conceptual courses in a Master’s Degree program leading to advanced certification for teachers as Reading Specialists. My areas of expertise were assessment, composition pedagogy and theory, content area reading, and theoretical models of reading. I also was heavily involved with research methods courses and masters thesis and project students.
Prior to my university teaching, I taught fourth grade in a Northern California public school for three years. I also taught for five years as an English teacher in a California public middle school.
Even before these experiences, for almost three years I tutored K-12 students who struggled to learn to read and write in a privately owned and operated reading clinic. I also taught courses offered through English Departments at community colleges for five years.
My purpose in offering this newsletter is to use these experiences to impact literacy development among children in and out of the classroom. I will post informal, free essays to make my background experience available to readers.
I invite you to comment in this newsletter to let me know what questions you have and what topics you’d like to read about. Please share this post with individuals who have an interest.
